  • Angola - 1975-2002: Civil war
  • A post-independence civil war began in 1975 between the Marxist Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), backed by the Soviet Union and Cuba, and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA), supported by the US and South Africa. After 16 years of fighting and 300,000 dead, a peace agreement in 1991 produced elections, but UNITA rejected the result and resumed the war. A new peace was made in 1994 and the United Nations sent peacekeeping troops, but fighting started again and the peacekeepers eventually withdrew. UNITA leader Jonas Savimbi was killed in a clash with government forces in February 2002 and a ceasefire was signed in April between government and rebels.
