  • El Salvador - 1979-92: Civil war
  • El Salvador’s very unbalanced social structure, with 200 families controlling political and economic life, was one cause of the 1979-92 civil war between the army and the Farabundo National Liberation Front (FMLN) guerrillas. Since it was during the Cold War, the US and Soviet Union were indirectly involved, with the US materially supporting the regime to block a leftist victory and the Soviets backing the rebels. Over 70,000 people died and the many abuses included death-squad activity by the government and others by the guerrillas. The fighting ended with the 1992 Chapultepec Peace Accords.
