  • Cambodia - 1975-79: Repression
  • The Red Khmers used extreme brutality and killed about 1.5 million people (more than a quarter of the population), either executed or starved or worked to death, making the Pol Pot regime one of the most murderous of the 20th century. Only one leader of the regime has so far been put on trial.

  • Cambodia - Red Khmers before 1975
  • The future revolutionary leaders were mostly middle class and studied at French universities in the 1950s where they were drawn to communism. The Cambodian Communist Party was formed in 1951. For lack of money and fear of repression, they went underground in 1962 and joined Vietnamese National Liberation Front bases. They staged a few guerrilla actions and then began serious insurgency in 1968.

  • Lived in Bangkok for a few months then went to Cambodia.
