Shot after an ambush as he and fellow photographer Sam Kai Faye were on their way to fighting north of Hue. He was shot when he stayed with Faye waiting for help to arrive.

  • Vietnam - 1959-75: War
  • The Vietnam war was between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (RDVN — North Vietnam) and the Republic of Vietnam (RVN — South Vietnam). It began as a civil war over whether to keep the country divided or to united it under the northern regime. From 1964, China and the Soviet Union backed the north and the US supported the south by sending troops. The war ended, after heavy casualties, with the north’s victory and the signing of a peace agreement in Paris in 1973. But some fighting continued and North Vietnamese troops captured Saigon in 1975. Vietnam then became united as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

  • The Viet Minh (League for the Independence of Vietnam) was a communist nationalist movement founded by Ho Chi Minh in 1941 to seek independence from French rule and Japanese occupation. It was disbanded when Vietnam became independent in 1954.
