  • In 1990, Slovenia became the first Yugoslav republic to hold free elections, with an overwhelming vote (90%) for independence. The government withdrew from the Yugoslav Federation on 25 June 1991 and the next day manned its borders. Clashes with federal troops lasted until 7 July, when Yugoslavia agreed to a truce arranged by the European Community, which recognised Slovenia’s independence on 15 January 1992. The country joined the United Nations in May 1993.
