  • Vietnam - 1959-75: War
  • The Vietnam war was between the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (RDVN — North Vietnam) and the Republic of Vietnam (RVN — South Vietnam). It began as a civil war over whether to keep the country divided or to united it under the northern regime. From 1964, China and the Soviet Union backed the north and the US supported the south by sending troops. The war ended, after heavy casualties, with the north’s victory and the signing of a peace agreement in Paris in 1973. But some fighting continued and North Vietnamese troops captured Saigon in 1975. Vietnam then became united as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

  • Arrested as conscientious objector by military police who burst into Associated Press offices. Sent to the South Vietnamese army’s 21st infantry division as cameraman and photographer but often sent photos to Associated Press as well.
Freelance photographer for Associated Press until 1972.
    Also called Vu Phong.
